Being a sheep, I picked up a copy of Lover Enshrined from the library.

1. penile system =/= a criminal system. Unless one is writing about a reproductive or urological problem, the desired word is probably "penal".
2. Stop with the giggly teenaged girl language coming out of the mouths of 6.5' badasses. And with the the texting language. It ruins the badass image.
3. Mr. N's narration was painful. I kept thinking of Foghorn Leghorn as I read, which I'm pretty sure wasn't the image Ward wanted in my head. Which brings me to...
4. Nine POVs? Nine? Were that many really necessary? Phury, Cormia, John Matthew, Qhuinn, Rehvenge, Xhex, Lash, Mr. N, Scribe Virgin. I could be missing some.

I am sooo skipping this book -- thanks for taking the hit for me!

Laughing at the penile system thing. Hey, Ward used to be a bigwig at a hospital, according to her bio, so maybe anatomical terms come more naturally? *g*

You're welcome :)

I think Ward is not the best of writers, technically speaking. A lot of her prose just made me cringe. But she is a good storyteller and sprinkles great images (one about a float bobbing to the surface sticks in my mind) in the text of her books. I have stopped drinking the Khool-Aid. Too much head hopping. And although I get the message of this book, change or die, I still feel like the plotting and world building are not planned, but change or are demolished simply to serve the "couple" at hand.

And I'm not really sure about the whole ghay thing with Qhuinn. I mean, is he strhaight? Is he bhi? Is he ghay? Or is his "rejection" of Blay because he sees himself settling down someday with a shellan just the vampire version of being stuck in the closet?

I actually thought this was better than the one before. I think because I was totally resigned to a lackluster romance that the fact that Phury and Cornea (which is how I think of her) were less interesting than a pile of poop on a sidewalk did not bother.

The texting was hysterical but I liked the Qhuinn/Bhlay storyline. I felt like it was a setup for a reuiniting in some later book. But i've heard this is not true. . .

I was wondering the same thing about Q/B.

You would think the BDB would know how to use predictive text, forgodsake.

Yes, they seem to be up on all other tech, so why not that?

She is an author "I don't get" and don't care to get. I know I am missing nothing. Liked your short and to the point review. LOL.

I'm very ambivalent about Ward. Yes, the BDB is like crack and doesn't pretend to be high art, so why are people getting all into an uproar about her work? But then I think there are some things to discuss:

1. marketing and series arcs -- should a series that is tailing into Urban Fantasy be marketed as a genre romance?

2. cultural appropriation and B/W -- widely discussed already, but the use of the word "race" and "protect the race" in LEn made me very uncomfortable

3. the stereotyping of gender roles in the books, females as broodmares (more or less), and the lack of strong female characters in the series

4. homoeroticism in mainstream genre romance
