The bookstore is f*cking with my mind
Sep. 2nd, 2006 07:41 pmAfter running errands, I toddled over to my favorite Borders store to use the 30% off coupon they sent me. Yes, after buying 4 books on Tuesday, plus anticipating the other 3 that have been pre-ordered, I was going to buy more -- if anything caught my eye. That coupon was burning a hole in my pocket. Plus I was hoping they might have shelved Lover Awakened early. Yes, I have a copy pre-ordered, but, well, as I may have mentioned before, I have an immediate gratification problem. If it was shelved, I would have spent the afternoon in the cafe, reading it. No such luck.
Not only did they not shelve LA early, they have REARRANGED THE BOOKSTORE! WTF? I have a pattern when I go to the bookstore -- cruise the display tables, then the "New in Fiction/Non-Fiction/Biography" shelves, then the free-standing paperback display, then on to the popular fiction. Romance, then mystery, then science fiction/fantasy, which turns into YA science fiction/fantasy, then straight YA. After, on to literature. But no, the bookstore has been rearranged, so my browsing pattern was destroyed.
There were fewer display tables, from 4 down to 2. The cards and journals were moved up front, plus it looked like some display racks were being set up for more non-book items, craft-y stuff.
The freestanding paperback display, usually 1/3 romance, the rest a combination of mystery, fantasy, science fiction, and suspense, was today predominantly mystery, suspense and thrillers, with only a couple of romances
Romance, formerly near the front of the store, is now at the back. Not only at the back, but the last shelf is the last of that section, backing up to the main walkway across the back of the store, which sees a fair amount of traffic, so you can no longer stand and browse comfortably. Instead you get bumped into by the staff and the people on the way to the children's section and the study aid section and the bathroom. Grrr. The hardbacks and trade paperbacks (including erotic romance) used to be shelved separately from mass market paperbacks, but still in the romance section. No longer. All blended together. Another grrrr.
YA and science fiction/fantasy for YA are now closer to the children's section, and separated from the manga section. Mystery and science fiction are in the same place. What used to be romance is more literary fiction.
Why the upheaval? To make room for the racks holding the 2007 calendars.
I was quite disturbed. I heard a couple of other people complaining about the changes as well.
What did I leave with? The Abortionist's Daughter, a mystery, and Women of the House, nonfiction about colonial women merchants. I probably would've put The Abortionist's Daughter back and waited for it to arrive at the library, except I read the afterword, in which the author gives thanks to Young Audiences of Colorado. And it seemed like a good idea to support a YA artist, even if it is an artist who is not on the roster of the chapter I volunteer for.
I probably would've purchased more, but nothing else caught my eye.
