Pirates of the Caribbean redux
Jul. 15th, 2006 09:18 pmWent to see PotC2 today. Sold out show -- the 1:00pm show! Left with mixed feelings, thinking that it would've been better to wait until the third movie came out so I could watch them together.
1. How did those two pirates who were part of the "dead" crew in the first movie survive? I thought they all "died" after the Aztec curse was lifted. Same with Barbosa.
2. Did Captain Jack Sparrow call Bootstrap Bill "Uncle", making him cousin to Will Turner?
3. The CGI was overpowering. I kept thinking of Star Wars Episode One, which was totally overwhelmed by CGI.
4. The last shot of of Sparrow and the cracken? Another Star Wars flash, this time to Hansolo being cast into the pit of Sarlac -- I think that was its name, the thing in the beginning of Return of the Jedi.
5. The men. Mmmm. Commodore Norrington. Good guy turned bad turned something else. Will he be totally evil, now that he has given the contents of the chest to the East India Co. rep? Can he be redeemed? And Will Turner, too. He was too young and boyish in the first movie, but has improved. Johnny Depp was amazing, as usual, but Captain Jack Sparrow was less charming for me.
6. The love triangle. Meh. Not really necessary, given how much other stuff was going on, plot-wise.
A bunch of trailers were shown, but I've either forgotten them or want to erase them from my memory (Talladega Nights? Blech.)...except The Guardian. I'm not a Kevin Costner fan, although I loved his Crash Davis in Bull Durham. But he looked good as a Coast Guard rescue jumper in the preview. The story looks like a combination of Backdraft and The Perfect Storm, both of which I like. Plus, I have a soft spot for Coasties.
