Laura Lippman's new Tess Monaghan mystery No Good Deeds is on bookstore shelves. Repeats to self: No new hardbacks. Wait for the paperback. No new hardbacks. I liked LL's last book, The Power of Three, as well as her shortstory in Baltimore Noir, but prefer the Tess Monaghan books.

Rosina Lippi (aka Sara Donati, author of Into the Wilderness, etc.) has a book out that looks interesting: Tied to the Tracks. Another hardback. Repeats mantra.

Picked up a copy of Linda Howard's Cover of Night, skimmed the first chapter. Eh. Put it back on the shelf without any qualms.

Mapping the World of Harry Potter, edited by Mercedes Lackey, was on the shelf in the science fiction/fantasy section. I was seriously tempted. Hmmm. Might be a good birthday gift for The Biochemist . . . although she's very into HP, so she may already have a copy.

Other books of interest:
Vellum (I forgot to write down the author)
Closer by Jo Leigh
Marjorie Liu's latest book, which I cannot find anywhere

You were right to put the new Linda Howard back on the shelf. It was well written, interesting hero, but it had a plot that made no sense at all. Even one of the bad guys said it made no sense. I enjoyed it, but I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I hadn't paid the hardcover sale price for it.

I've read a couple of reviews that knock the plot. LH has fallen off my autobuy list in the past few years as she has moved away from romance toward suspense. I really like her heroes. They seem very alpha to me, but with endearing little bits of beta mixed in. The relationships and character building seem to lose out to the mystery/suspense in her more recent books . . . for me, at least.

hardbacks

Your local library would probably have the books you've listed here -- so you can read now, and maybe buy the softcover down the road, if you liked it enough.

My local library hasn't purchased any copies -- yet. After checking for TTTT in the card catalog (can I still call it that if it isn't on cards anymore?), I approached the circulation dept. and requested it. I also pointed out that Rosina Lippi = Sara Donati, which got the attention of the librarian, who loves the Wilderness books, so I imagine TTTT will soon appear in my library. :)

Clicked "post" too soon

I have a couple of the other books listed on my reserve list right now, but I'm fairly far down the list. Something like #87 on the list for the Lippman book.

Mostly, I'm feeling sulky about my book budget, especially the hardback moratorium, because there are so many good books out there demanding my attention.

Me too. Her TM book about the Poe Toaster was wicked slick. I used to go to Poe's grave every now and them for Halloween, and she nailed some many details about the toaster and Baltimore. *sigh*

I've Vellum on my wish list too. Hal something, I think.
