More Temeraire

I finished Novik's third Temeraire book, Black Powder War. Haven't written a review of it yet, but the long and short of it for me:
*Novik's character creation and development is excellent. I especially love how Temeraire is growing and learning and forming opinions. The scene in which Iskierka, a fire-breathing dragonet is hatched, was wonderful. He is simultaneously irritated because she won't listen and wait to be hatched, annoyed because he has to give up his food for her, and jealous because she is taking as her captain one of his crew.
*The glimpse into what was going on in the rest of the world, politically and socially speaking, during the Napoleonic period is a breath of fresh air. Most historical fiction that I've read set in that period is located entirely in Europe, specifically in France, Britain, and Spain.
*The pacing and editing are still a little off to me. Novik has never met a colon or semi-colon that she didn't like ;). But maybe that's just her style and I'll just need to get used to it when I read her books.
