Reading mini-slump

I've just discarded three four books at the halfway mark. Never used to give up on a book midway through, but I've decided that I'm not going to waste time reading books for entertainment that don't actually entertain me or engage me in some way. The engagement may be to completely piss me off, and that's okay as long as it generates some reaction.
The books I've discarded:
The Dashwood Sisters Secrets of Love by Rosie Rushton. Teen Brit chick lit, based on Sense & Sensibility. Blah. Wanted to slap the mother into being a responsible adult, and spank one of the girls. Next.
The Destroyer Goddess by Laura Resnick. Part two of In Fire Forged, and the end of the Sileria books. Eh. Too much going on. She needed a more ruthless editor, because some of the subplots could have been removed without damaging the main plot at all. Got tired of reading side stories. Cut to the chase!
A Rose for the Crown by Anne Easter Smith. Historical fiction, speculative. About Kate Haute, possible mistress/lover of Richard III prior to his marriage. I like historical fiction, and this book had a blurb from Sharon Kay Penman, whose books I devour. But this book was painfully slow. After the first 100 pages, I gave up and put the book in the "return" pile to take back to the library.
Sex, a mystery by Fiona Quirina. The heroine/protagonist does something TSTL in the first chapter, and I couldn't get over it. Done.
Started Dixieland Sushi by Cara Lockwood on the train this morning. Saw a review at The Library Diva's blog that was pretty positive, so I picked up a copy at the library. I'm liking it so far.

Would you mind suggesting a Laura Resnick book for me to start with? TIA!

I think there was a review posted at DearAuthor.com. In terms of fantasy, I liked her ebook of story stories best (titled simply Volume One, and still available on Amazon, I think). She also writes/wrote romance under the pen name Laura Leone. LL's Fallen From Grace was very good, but controversial when it was released a couple of years ago. She also wrote a nonfiction book that I've been looking for about her trip across Africa.

I heard about Fallen From Grace, but I think I should be taking a break from romance at the moment. Otherwise romance readers are going to start thinking I hate romance.
