Here's my review for the book I read for AngieW’s April reading challenge. The challenge was to pull a book out of the TBR that has been there for six months or more.

Title: Goddess of the Sea

Author: P.C. Cast

Year Published:2003, by Berkley Sensation

Why did you get this book? The cover caught my eye.

Do you like the cover? Yes. I like the green shade, which is reminiscent of sea colors, along with the mermaid. They match the content of the book, unlike many, many other books.

Did you enjoy the book? It was okay.

Was the author new to you and would you read this author again? Not a new author to me. I read her debut book, Goddess by Mistake, as well as two Luna releases, Elphame’s Choice and Brighid’s Quest. I may read books in the future, as well, just to see how the Luna series goes on, but she hasn’t made it to auto-buy or even auto-read status for me.

Are you keeping it or passing it on? Passing it on. Already posted to PBS and requested by another reader.

Anything else?

Here’s the backblurb:

On the night of her twenty-fifth birthday, alone in her apartment, Air Force Sergeant Christine Canady wished for one thing: a little magic in her life. After drinking way too much champagne, she performed, of all crazy things, a goddess-summoning ritual, hoping that it would somehow make her life a little less ordinary . . . but she never believed the spell would actually work.

When her military plane crashes into the ocean, CC’s mission overseas takes an unexpected turn. She awakens to find herself in a legendary time and place where magic rules the land – occupying the body of the mythic mermaid Undine. But there is danger in the waters and the goddess Gaea turns this modern, military gal into a beautiful damsel so tha she can see shelter on land. CC is soon rescued (literally) by a knight in shining armor. She should be falling in love with this dream-come-true, but instead she aches for the sea and Dylan, the sexy merman who has stolen her heart.

I really liked the idea of this book – a twist on the Little Mermaid fairytale. The execution wasn’t all that bad, really, it just didn’t work for me. In the end, I just didn’t care if Christine/Undine had a HEA with Dylan.

One criticism: character development. Christine/Undine’s passion for Dylan seemed awfully sudden. Why did they love each other? They went from being strangers (sort of, since she was in Undine’s body and he’d loved Undine since childhood) to being Madly In Love in a finger-snap. The villain was an uber-villain, ultra eeeevil unbalanced, but somehow hid this from everyone except Christine/Undine and Dylan.

This is the Cast book I threw against the wall with great force. I *wanted* to like it so much, but I just couldn't.

It wasn't bad enough for me to toss it, but the book was disappointing. There was a lot of room to write a great story, but it ended up being wasted.

I think I'm finished trying Cast's Goddess series, but I may pick up her next Luna book.
