Tapas y mas
Dec. 8th, 2005 08:20 amTraining at work this week. I'm not going into that, because it'll make me want to tear my hair out. Anyway, after training yesterday, I went to La Tasca, a tapas place over by MCI Center, with my regional counterparts. We bitched about stuff and chatted and ate and drank; a good time was had by all.
I love tapas. Had tortilla espanola, espinacas salteadas, y paella verdura. I've been trying for years (since my first trip to Spain in high school) to make a proper tortilla espanola. If the eggs are firm enough, the bottom is burnt; if the bottom is right, the middle is runny. I've tried cooking it and then finishing it like a frittata. I've tried an expensive omelet pan. Just can't do it right...which gives me an excuse to go out to eat at Jaleo or La Tasca when I feel a tortilla urge. And the spinach with garlic, olive oil, pine nuts and raisins made me like spinach after a lifetime of including it in the "gross" column, along with brussels sprouts.
But the discovery of the night was a drink called La Gitana. Licor 43, Grand Marnier, OJ and something else. Woo boy! Tasted like fruit juice or candy; like an orange or citrus Jolly Rancher might. Wow! Talk about dangerous. I could suck 2 or 3 of those down easily, and not feel anything until I fell off my bar stool.
Then I went home and made a sweet potato casserole, 'cause I'd promised. Sweet potatoes, sugar, eggs, butter, and vanilla, with a crumble made of corn flakes, brown sugar and pecans on top. It's more like a dessert. I can't wait until lunch, when I get to have some. I love the holiday season -- not the shopping, but the eating.
