Thirteen Things about jmc

Thirteen things that I remember about the house I lived in as a kid. Thanks to Beth, who posted about her mom's house.

1. The color of it. We called it the yellow house, but really it was almost an apricot shade. Painted on to old, old wood.

2. The tire swing in the back yard, hanging from a massive tulip tree. You could sit in it and swing, or you could twist it around and around, then squinch your arms and legs into the seat and let it unwind. By the time the unwind finished, you were so dizzy, you'd fall over when you tried to stand up. ::shrug:: It was fun when I was 12.

3. The gigantic sycamore tree in the side yard. The base was at least eight feet in diameter, and there were no branches anywhere near the ground, but I loved the way the bark peeled off in strips and the sycamore balls that would fall. Seed pods?

4. The curving stairs. Both sets. Although I liked the set leading from the kitchen more because the split at the top was cool.

5. The old fashioned doors to all of the rooms. Painted white, with wrought iron hardware. In all the usual places, plus at the foot of both sets of stairs.

6. The long, long drive way. It was maybe 1/2 mile long, but it seemed much long when I was a kid, running for the bus. It was lined by dignified Lombardi poplars. After a hurricane, one-third of them had to be removed. It looked strange, even after replacements were planted, like a mouth missing teeth.

7. The swing on the front porch. It was nice to sit there in the evening in the summer.

8. The window in the corner bedroom upstairs -- it would come apart in order to get large pieces of furniture upstairs (often they couldn't make the turn of the stairs). When the frame was disassembled, you could see down to the original log cabin.

9. The original, old cellar. It had a dirt floor, very steep steps, and was snake infested. But it also had the original beams, still with bark.

10. The pond on the far end of the property. Full of algae and frogs. The scene of a disastrous sinking on the occasion of a birthday sleepover.

11. The "meadow" on one side of the drive way. In the summer, the grass would grow to be a couple of feet tall, and between the pines and the tall grass, you could build a fort and play all day.

12. The roof over the back porch. It was old, old, old, made of tin or aluminum, and was white washed. When it rained hard or hailed, white flakes would rain drift down to the porch. And the rain hitting it was deafening.

13. The funky orange carpet in my bedroom. In retrospect, I think it must have been a remnant - who would pick that funky color? But I thought it was different and distinctive, which is why I chose that room when we moved in.
