I posted about this yesterday myself, but had extensive discussions with my husband and some friends about it. Basically I determined that the security people were being asshats. They had a lot of other options they could have taken, to make sure her nipples weren't concealing dangerous weapons, but they chose to use their "power" because they could and humiliate her. It makes me furious.
Last time I flew, there was a very decorated fellow in line in front on me -- his piercings set the metal detector off, but after they waved him to the side and used the wand, they let him through after a few questions. At the time, I wondered about nipple rings, and how it would've been handled if it had been a woman.
I agree, they were exercising their power and humiliated her intentionally. Why? Because her body decorations weren't "mainstream"? (Whatever that's supposed to be.) Or just because they could? I don't know. I'm curious about whether or not this sort of thing has happened before -- I can't imagine that she was the first person with nipple piercings to fly since 9/11.
I was talking this over with a friend the other day and we were of the same opinion as you. I'm wondering if she spent hours on that plane with a feeling like her nipples were naked. I get that way when I take my rings off.
I'm still not understanding why she had to take them off. It's not as if earrings, tongue rings, etc. have to be removed to fly. What would the TSA have done if it was a genital piercing?
