Homeownership
Feb. 4th, 2006 04:00 pmThe rowhouse next to mine was renovated and is for sale at an astronomical price. It took more than a year, and the construction was not so much fun. I often came home to find men in my back yard (having climbed my fence) or erecting scaffolding on my roof. Hello? Who gave you permission to do that? Mr. Bill? He may be the general contractor, but he doesn't own this house and doesn't have the authority to let you up on my roof, thank you.
Anyway, the flashing between our roofs was damaged or wasn't laid right when they added their third story, and it caused a huge leak in my spare room. The wallpaper (50 years worth, on top of layers of paint on top of plaster) started to buckle after it dried out. After a great deal of nagging, the company that rehabbed the house next door is going to repair it. I was told that the interior guy would stop by and look at it today. He did stop by. And started tearing the paper off. And moved all of my furniture out of the way. He'll be hanging drywall today and tomorrow, then painting on Monday. That was fast.
But not really fast enough. A colleague is going to be staying with me (in theory in that spare room) for a couple of weeks. Her daughter has been admitted to Johns Hopkins Hospital, which is relatively close to my home. They live down in southern Maryland, a 1.5 hour drive on a good day without traffic. I offered the spare room so that she and her son-in-law would be able to visit. The plan was for her to drive to work as usual, but take the train home with me. But I made the offer before the "construction" began in spare room. I wasn't expecting them to get right to work! I'm hoping she doesn't mind the couch for one night while the drywall is put up and the paint dries.
