Question for anyone who passes by: what's the protocol for links to other blogs and websites? There are a bunch of blogs that I check out regularly, but I've only posted a link to the ones who have link to me or to the ones I've asked permission of. Would it be rude to post a link without asking for permission first?

I don't think it's rude to post a link without asking first. I suppose I just think of links as a way to show what you're reading. Unless it was a spammer or porn site, I wouldnt care who linked to me. It IS the internet here. Nothing's truly private.

I agree with Nicole. I just link to whomever or whatever I find interesting at the moment. I always thought the anxiety LJers display over adding people to their friends list, for example, was weird. Different culture, I guess.

And more people link to you, j, than are listed in your sidebar (I'm thinking of crankyreader and kristiej.)

You know, I check out Kristie(J) and crankyreader regularly, but never noticed a link! I'm just unobservant, I guess.

Oh, thanks! I gather that linking etiquette is pretty informal nowadays, aside from proper hat tips, but some go by reciprocal links and some just link what they like. It's your slice of the web, so do as you please, I say. :)

or at least reader blogs ;)

I think you can link to whatever you like.

LJ I think is a lil different than a book blog, if it is friends only. Like I have crap I wouldn't bore book blog readers with or would want the general reader to come across.

Does that mean it is 'safe', hell people can hack into shit I don't even think about so I am sure if someone really wanted to get into my lj they prolly could.

BUT lj that are book journals are generally open and I would say no email or anything is needed.

I've done both...linked without asking and then asked before linking. *G* Usually, those I've asked were all for my linking to their blog.

I don't think I've ever asked someone if I can link to them. Does that make me rude? Possibly. I have been asked if someone can link to me though which I was flattered by. :)

I guess for me my blog roll is so that I can keep track of what blogs I like without trying to remember all the urls - It's not like I'm claiming I know this blogger and we're friends or anything.
