More fraud?
Apr. 24th, 2007 08:00 amMore fraud? This time by the average worker, instead of just the highest levels of government? I'm shocked. Not. Hand out cash, more or less, without any oversight and people will take advantage. I know people who (used to) do this (buy, not sell). I had a colleague who walked to work and took public transportation only when the weather was bad...but who got the whole subsidy and used it for their personal transportation. AT my old job, one partner's wife was a federal employee; she got the subsidy even though she usually rode in to work with him (buildings adjacent and he had parking in his building as a perk). I know people who would love to get the subsidy but can't because they drive -- the only thing keeping them honest is their own conscience, since apparently no one actually checks the transit subsidy applications. I use the subsidy -- but I still pay out of pocket for half my commute since it costs more than the subsidy provides. I'm okay with that, though, and I appreciate that part of the cost is covered as an employee benefit.
