Reading resolution

Well, this year I made a reading resolution, which I have never done before. And like my other, non-reading resolutions, it has already been broken. The resolution was to pick books from my TBR mountain, and not to buy any new books until the mountain was reduced to a more reasonable size. I have poor impulse control, so the best way for me to avoid buying more books is to avoid book stores. Except I was stuck at the train station with no reading material (finished the book in my bag and was desperate for something new to read), so I succumbed to the lure of the B.Dalton store. And I couldn't just buy one book, could I? It would be lonely...

And I bought a bunch of books from the library, too, so my TBR mountain is growing. It's an addiction, I think, or a compulsion.

I used to make this resolution too. I think I have a greater chance of not biting my nails any more than I do of finishing my TBR before buying new books, though! ;-)

I don't really expect to ever finish the TBR mountain, I just want to reduce it a little. I'm afraid that I'll start buying duplicates soon...if I haven't already.

I don't personally buy duplicates (yet), but I somehow end up with them anyway through gifts and friends who pass their books to me.

I just feel so guilty for having all these unread books. I'll buy a book knowing I'll read it "someday," but someday turns out to be years away. My spouse (who is not a reader, how that happened, I'll never know) gives me no end of grief (mostly good-natured) about how many books I have, and how many of those books I've actually read.

Oh, and I love your avatar -- I have that print framed over my fireplace!

I have a copy of the print framed at home, too :) The last time I went to the National Gallery, the gift shop had a copy for sale...I was quite tempted, but make do with the print instead.

I got mine in a sale from allposters.com -- their selection of frame and mat, and I have to say it's a better selection than I ever would have thought to make. I'm very happy with my choice.

Our house is peppered with mostly Pre-Raphaelite art and Amy Brown art.

It's definitely a compulsion. It calms the hoarder in me, and I figure its not like I'm hoarding something bad.

I just PBS'ed Blame it On Chocolate. It was one of those books I got because I liked the title but had I read the back blurb I would have known better and put it down. It reads a bit too much like a HP for my taste. The Manolo Matrix is exciting though. I didn't know it was available yet - I think it's a Feb release. (I act like I read The Givenchy Code and have been eagerly awaiting the sequel for months.)

What does that mean? Sorry, I'm slow to pick up a lot of abbreviations.

I really liked the cover and the title of Blame It On Chocolate, and I'm sorry to hear that it was too HP-ish. I read HPs when I'm in the mood for mind candy, but it's irritating to buy a bigger book only to find that it is an overgrown HP.

My rationalization for my book buying addiction is that I don't do drugs, I don't drink to excess, and I have no other expensive hobbies. But sooner or later all usable space in my house will be covered by books, so I've got to get it under control.

hee if that is jay as in yapaway I am gonna guess PBS is paperback swap... a trading group type thing.

And no it isn't bad it is a hobby and fun! There is nothing wrong with owning hundreds of books and buying more. really...

Yeah, PBS was short for PaperbackSwap.com. I get rid of most of my stuff there.

You might not find Blame it on Chocolate as HP-ish as I did. I just have a very low tolerance for the plot points HP seems to favor.

You mean you don't like the secret babies, marriages of convenience, uber-wealthy business tycoons who have to blackmail women into dating or marrying them? ;) Yes, the plot points are irritating. I keep reading a couple of authors, because they used to be a cut above. As I posted elsewhere recently, I occasionally pick up an author I don't recognize in the hope that it will be a better book and I'm always disappointed. But I keep doing it! What's wrong with me?
