Not up on popular culture

Oscar nominations are listed here, and many other places, I'm sure. I haven't gone to the movies much this year -- unlike last year, when I saw all of the films nominated for Best Film except Capote. This year? None of them. In fact, the only films nominated that I've seen are Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (art direction) and An Inconvenient Truth (documentary)...and one of those I saw on DVD rather than at the theater.

I think the Charles and Landmark on E are showing The Queen, which I'm vaguely interested in, and Volver, which I do want to see (I <3 Almodovar). I'm more interested in Babel, but don't think it's playing anywhere.  And maybe Children of Men.

Do go see Volver, it's wonderful! And I'm not surprised to see Penelope Cruz nominated for her role there, she was really good.

I'm planning on watching Babel, too, and also one of the films nominated for Best Foreign Picture, Pan's Labyrinth. It's been getting very nice reviews here.

I've seen Pirates, Happy Feet and Monster House - I suppose I'm not the intended audience for the last two, but I thought Happy Feet was fairly uninspired, and the children preferred Flushed Away, which they'd seen the week before. Monster House didn't impress me as fabulous either - and Pirates struck me as a bit in-betweeny, like the second of the Back to the Future trilogy.
My fifteen year old saw The Pursuit of Happiness tonight, and said it was really good.

I'd like to see Children of Men - I read the book, but I've forgotten it enough that it wouldn't spoil the film.
