2005 reading

I didn't start keeping track of what I read until January, 2003. What I read before 2003 will forever remain a mystery. I started top keep track in 2003 because I wanted to be able to participate in AAR's annual poll. Still, I use a written journal, rather than a spreadsheet or database...although I may add a spreadsheet this year.

I read a total of 218 new books books in 2005. I don't keep track of re-reads, but I know that I re-read at least 20 books plus the entire In Death series.

53 categories -- This is a high number for me; I think it is the result of my continued glom of the backlists of Susan Napier, Robyn Donald and Helen Bianchin.

57 non-romance -- Lots of mysteries, some YA fiction, some science fiction and fantasy.

24 EH/medievals -- this was a big surprise for me, because if you asked me whether I read many historicals, I would automatically say no.

18 paranormals

17 chicklit/WF

16 contemporaries

13 romantic suspense

20 scattered among Canadian/American set historicals, trad Regencies and romantica. -- I tried romantica. Truly, I don't really understand the distinction between erotica and romantica, despite all of the discussions that have gone on at various romance websites. It's kind of hit or miss for me.

The 218 down from 280ish in 2004 and 300+ in 2003. Of those, 98 books were published in 2005. I think maybe the number is down because I'm re-reading more...and watching more DVDs.

I, too, started keeping track for the AAR poll. I always had trouble remembering which books were elegible, because I tend to read lots of older books, so Excel, with the possibility it has of filtering records, was perfect to help me vote.

I'm looking at my reading by subgenres right now (will be posting about it on Monday) and it's very different to yours. You read more non-romance, for starters.

My non-romance numbers were up this year in comparison to prior years, but that was not intentional. I glommed Victoria Thompson's Gaslight Mysteries, which are very similar to P.B. Ryan's Nell Sweeney series although set in NYC a few decades later, and Robin Paige's Edwardian mysteries. Also discovered Margaret Maron, Nevada Barr, Stephanie Barron's Jane Austen series, and Carrie Bebris' Darcy mysteries.
