To be honest, many of Laura Kinsale's books went over my head (I read many of them when I was 19 so maybe too complex for me then).
The two that stand out for me are Flowers from the Storm and For My Lady's Heart - there are whimsical spots and like you say, misunderstandings that would have stopped the minute a conversation could take place. But the yearning in these two stories was what pulled me in.
I'm not going out of my way to read this new one as I'm not one for 'pretty' words and lack of communication will get a book tossed back into the TBR pile in a heart beat.
I'm glad you talked about it, I hadn't heard anything so I thought the book maybe crashed and burned.
