UPS?

Can someone explain to me UPS's business model for residential deliveries? 'Cause I'm missing something.  I get that 9am-5pm works for commercial deliveries, but does it work for residential for most people? I'm thinking not, but maybe I'm stuck thinking inside the box. For the most recent package I received, UPS wasted gas trying to deliver to me three times, even though I noted after the first to either leave it or hold it because I wouldn't be available during their standard delivery hours.

Given a shipping option, I will uniformly select USPS rather than UPS; it may take longer, but the post office is open for pick ups on Saturday, unlike the UPS Customer Service center near me, which is open from 9am-7pm, Monday through Friday. I may make it by 7pm, but probably not, and they only hold stuff for five day, then it's back to sender. Plus, my mail guy will leave packages between the storm door and the front door; the UPS guy will not. He will, however, leave packages with my neighbors...who don't answer the freaking door when I knock, even though I can hear them inside.
