The Biochemist is an evil, evil woman.

She sent me this email yesterday:

The Killers remind me of Mommom.

Seriously. They cover "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town" on Sawdust, and now anytime I hear any of their songs, I imagine that song, and the big Caprice Classic, and going to town to do the shopping.

*head/desk*

Backstory: when we were small children, we lived in Florida; every summer, Mom sent me and TB to stay with the grandparents, which we adored. We were the oldest grandbabies and we could do No Wrong. Seriously. Anyway, once a week, Mommom would get all dolled up (Poppop's words) and go into town to go to the bank, do the grocery shopping, etc. The "dolling up" including non-housework and gardening clothes, along with lipstick, usually from one of those itty-bitty Avon samplers from the neighborhood Avon lady. The ride to and from town was just long enough to listen to one side of the Kenny Rogers tape Mommom kept in the car -- it was the only tape she kept in the car. We knew all those songs by heart, including "Ruby". I still know all the words to "The Gambler" and "Reuben James".

When I complained to TB that I was humming "Ruby", she replied

Haha, my cunning plan worked: I am not alone in my inability to get the song out of my head!

No, really, I'm sorry.

Here, sing this instead: I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts, there they are all standing in a row...

or...

It's a small world after all, it's a small world after all...

The first song is from The Lion King, and I spent most of our trip to Hawaii singing that or Cheeseburger in Paradise. The second song (when put on permanent replay) constitutes a violation of the Geneva Convention and the UNCAT, I believe.

I listened to MJB last night. And Santana. And the Dixie Chicks. And Steve Earle. And even some showtunes.

But what tune is still stuck in my head? "You picked a fine time to leave me, Lucille, with four hungry children and a crop in the field..."
