More bean soup?
Dec. 3rd, 2007 02:43 pmSeriously, what is it about bean soup that guys like? There are several men of my acquaintance who do NOT cook. They range in age from 30s to 60s; a couple of them are capable of cooking -- they did it when they were single -- but seldom do. But each of them makes bean soup periodically, usually during the first real cold snap of winter, or in January when it is cold and miserable out. They don't cook anything else, except maybe steaming some blue crabs in the summer. Which is, of course, a macho kind of cooking to be doing. Dropping live crabs into a pot with beer in the bottom? Then standing around the pot and chatting with the guys, drinking more beer, waiting for the crabs to steam? Proto-typical male cooking in my family when I was growing up.
What is it about bean soup that is so manageable for them and appealing to them? As opposed to any other type of soup or entree?
Inquiring minds want to know.
I've asked them each, especially when I'm being invited to partake of the soup, and I just get these clueless looks back.
