Just a tease...

Okay, here's the list of stuff that I read or attempted to read while on vacation. Before you wonder how I managed to read that much, remember that I spent 3 days of the vacation lounging on the beach or on the deck.

1. Muggles and Magic by George Beahm. Meh. I thought there was going to be some literary analysis. Nope, just a summary of events, quotes, etc. DNF

2. Girls of Riyadh by Rajaa Alsanea. Liked it. Saudi chick lit that was originally published in Arabic and caused a bit of a kerfluffle in Saudi Arabia for being so revealing about the secret lives of young women of the "velvet" class.

3. The Saffron Kitchen by Yasmin Crowther. I have a lot to say about this book, especially in comparison to Girls of Riyadh.

4. Kate Rothwell's Knight's Challenge. Really liked this one.

5. The Prince's Convenient Bride by Robyn Donald. I think my auto-buy relationship with her is over. These HPs set in fake kingdoms are not very good in comparison to some of her older stuff.

6. Such a Pretty Girl by Laura Weiss. YA that rocked.

7. Supernatural: Nevermore by Keith R.A. de Candido. Mrowr, Sam and Dean not confined by the screen but let loose in my imagination. Plus, nods to Poe, Homicide (I think -- they mention a homicide detective from Balmer named Ballard), good music, etc.

8. Hard and Fast by Lisa Renee Jones. Category. Sports-themed. Not bad, but I can't get over the "no condom necessary, I'm on the pill" thing. Because pregnancy is (of course) the only thing that two near strangers must worry about when having sex.

9. Tangled Up in You by Rachel Gibson. Meh. I think I'm finished with Gibson. This was a book I picked up at a used book store (they seem to proliferate in Cape Cod), but even the half price was too much IMO.

10. Trouble by Ann Christopher. DNF. It could be a great book, but I can't get past two things: the age difference (23 vs. 34) and the fact that he is her boss, she is his intern, he has influence or control over something that is garnering (I think) some sort of credit for school. Those two things together really made me uncomfortable. All I could think was "unprofessional".

11. Slip Knot by Linda Greenlaw. Greengrass? The woman captain from The Perfect Storm. This is her first fiction attempt. I started it Friday on the ferry ride home, but haven't finished it yet. It wasn't bad, but I don't feel really compelled to keep going.

I also listened to HP7. And I wonder why Jim Dale chose for Bellatrix Lestrange to have a French accent. She's thoroughly English, despite the (married) last name, and her sisters (both speaking parts in the book) don't speak with French accents.

Wow, great reading binge but obviously not a lot of keepers. As for age differences I pretty much can't read a romance with a male under the age of 30. I think it's because as I get older the heroes have to age also. And then there is 12 years between Bob and I so I never fell in love with someone under the age of 34 ;)

Y'know, the older I get, the more big age differences make me uncomfortable -- but really only when one of the h/h is under 25. I guess 'cause pretty much everyone I knew (and know) was a moron until their mid 20s, and the maturity and life/living gap between 23 and 34 seems huge to me. :shrugs:

I see absolutely no reason for this and it's been driving me nuts.
