Thirteen things to do

Thirteen Things about jmc Okay, this is a list of 13 things I want to do in my life . . . things that I am capable of doing, given enough money and spare time. I’ve omitted the stuff that is impossible, like catching a TD pass from Brett Favre at Lambeau in December – ‘cause he’s gonna retire and while I play intramural football for a social league, it’s not nearly the same.1. Learn to surf. My balance, it is not so good, so while I have lust in my heart to stand on the board in the sun, it’ll take a huge amount of time and patience. Plus, living closer to the ocean. 2. Learn to read, write and speak more languages. Any would be good, but I particularly would like to learn Arabic and Euskera. 3. Walk the Camino de Santiago. This will take a lot of prep though, because while I walk every day and am comfortable walking 5-6 miles at a time, walking all day for a couple of weeks is different. I’m not Catholic and my desire to walk the route is not because I am penitent. Can’t explain it really, just want to do it. Plus, I want to see the Botafumeiro in Santiago de Compostella, and see Cabo Finisterra. 4. See the cave drawings at Altamira. 5. Visit San Bartolo and see the Mayan drawings in person -- photos aren't good enough, they must be incredible IRL. 6. Visit Moscow, and see all of the places that Alla Alexandrovna used to talk to her students about. 7. See the red rocks of Australia, and the green of New Zealand. 8. Learn to sail a sailboat – the kind that relies only on the wind and the current, with no other power source. When I was a kid and we went camping with Girl Scouts, we always sailed these little sunfish, which I loved. As an adult, the only boats I go out on now are boats powered by Johnsons, Evinrudes, and Mercuries. 9. Go skydiving. This would require that I get over my height and control issues – I’m okay with heights, as long as I’m inside a plane or a building, not so okay once there isn’t a barrier between me and the possibility of plummeting to my death. 10. Learn to snow ski. I tried when I was in college and crunched my knee, (see #1 re: my lack of balance and grace) and haven’t tried since, not even waterskiing. I’m thinking if I start slowly, try cross-country skiing, rather than downhill, my control issues and fear wouldn’t be such a problem. But I will need to live in a colder climate to ski regularly…or just take a vacation to Salt Lake City or Boulder or maybe Vermont one winter. 11. Write down my grandmother’s family history and fill in the gaps. My great uncle has done a family tree with dates and even met family (many times removed) in Ireland, but hasn’t written down a narrative or explored the peoples’ lives, just gotten dates and birth/death certificates. I’d like to expand on what he has already done. 12. Visit the Bodleian Library at Oxford. 13. Be admitted to the bar of the Supreme Court. This is actually relatively easy to do, I just have to get myself organized and ask two people to sponsor me. The cooler thing to do (and much less likely for me) would be to argue before the Court. Not likely because I’m not a litigator and have no desire to be one. Links to other Thursday Thirteens! (leave your link in comments, I’ll add you here!) Doug's history in photos |
