The Baseball Hall of Fame, that is. Cal Ripken. Did anyone really doubt that he'd be voted in the first year he was eligible? Check out the WaPo articles here and here.
I feel privileged to have watched Cal play baseball for years. My brother and I were at the game in which he did NOT start after playing 2,632 consecutive games. I got tickets at the last minute. We were running late, arriving just before the anthem was sung. They didn't announce the line up, and the teams took the field. Looking at the line up on screen, I nudged TCG (my brother, The Computer Guy) and said, "Hey, where's Cal? Ryan Minor's at third. Who's he?" And then Derek Jeter slapped a ground ball toward third. And when Minor scooped it up and threw it to first base, everyone realized Cal wasn't on the field. The roar was amazing. Everyone stood up. The Yankees came out of the dugout and tipped their hats. Cal received a standing ovation and had to come out of the dugout to wave before the game could resume.
I'd be willing to go to Cooperstown to see his induction...like lots of Balmer fans, I'm sure. Must get info.
