November TBR Challenge

I was getting to the end of the month, worried about finishing AngieW's reading challenge: a book published originally as an e-book. My reading slump has been prolonged. But I scanned through my e-bookshelf and found The Chronicles of Stella Rice by Adrienne Kama.

Stella Rice is a thirty-something business owner and native of Baltimore, Maryland. And she's on a permanent vacation. From men! Having just broken things off with her latest dating disaster, Paul the Prick, Stella vows to never again be seduced by the charms of a man. Then she meets Jake, her ultra domineering kickboxing instructor. Ten minutes with Jake in the equipment room of his gym is enough to convince Stella that maybe she should give the whole man/woman thing another go. What she doesn't know is Jake has secrets that would make Paul the Prick look like a saint.

Why did I pick this book? I chose it for TBR challenge because it was the first original e-book on my e-bookshelf. Why did I buy it originally? I think someone recommended it in the comments over at Smart Bitches...except I can't remember the context now.

Copyright: 2005 by New Concepts.

Did I like the cover? It seemed okay when I viewed it in the ebookwise catalog, but when I enlarge it, the embracing couple looks...strange.

Did I enjoy the book? Not really. I didn't care for the narrator's voice -- 1st person POV. And I found the ending to be unsatisfying and not particularly believable.

New to me author? Would I read her again? Yes, new to me. I won't go out of my way to find Kama's backlist (assuming she has one), although I suppose I would pick up another book if I ran across it at the library.

Keeping or passing along? Can't pass it along. Deleting from bookshelf.

Anything else? Let's see. I felt like the book was too busy, trying to be erotic romance and urban fiction/women's fiction all at once. The development of the sexual relationship between Jake and Stella was kind of abrupt, and the relationship between Stella and Dev even more so.

I have major control issues, so D/S with the narrator as a submissive is problematic for me. I seldom pick up D/S stories, although I have enjoyed the occasional book or novella by Emma Holly. I'll just say (write) that this book doesn't compare well.

And the ending, with the idea of a successful menage going forward? Not so believable for me. Yeah, I got that the three of them were hot for each other, the two bi guys and the woman who wanted them both. But a couple of sex scenes and mental lusting do not a permanent relationship make.
